## Example and tips

### Example

Fictional example: a store takes in $36,600 including tax in September from 500 orders, so $73.20 per order. After removing 20% VAT, $2,000 of shipping and $1,200 of refunds before tax, plus 10 canceled orders, the average order value falls to $55.71 before tax.

### Tips

- Pick one convention (with or without tax, with or without shipping) and keep it month after month, or your comparisons mean nothing.
- Check the median order value too: a few very large orders are enough to pull the average up.
- A purchase made from a message sent after checkout is a new order: track revenue per customer as well, not only AOV.

## How it works

### Pick a period

Use a full month or quarter, and take revenue and the order count from that same period.

### Enter your two numbers

Type the revenue for the period and the number of orders placed. The calculator divides the first by the second.

### Handle tax

If your revenue includes VAT or sales tax, tick the option and enter your rate: the result is brought back to a pre-tax figure.

### Remove shipping and refunds

Tick the options you need to take out shipping charged to customers, refunded amounts and canceled orders.

### Compare and simulate

Compare the raw and adjusted average order value, then see how a higher AOV would change revenue for the same number of orders.

## Frequently asked questions

### How do you calculate average order value?

Divide revenue for a period by the number of orders placed in the same period. Fictional example: $24,000 in sales from 400 orders gives an average order value of $60. Keep the same convention (with or without tax, with or without shipping) so that months stay comparable.

### Should average order value include tax and shipping?

Either works as long as you do not mix them. AOV before tax and shipping reflects what customers buy from you, which is the right basis for margin and pricing decisions. AOV including tax and shipping matches what customers pay at checkout.

### Why doesn't my result match Shopify?

Shopify Analytics defines average order value as (gross sales - discounts) / orders, excluding adjustments made after the order. Gross sales are counted before taxes, shipping and returns, and canceled orders stay included. To get the same figure, enter gross sales minus discounts and the total number of orders, with no option ticked.

### Should I remove refunds and canceled orders?

Yes if you want the average value of the orders you actually kept: subtract refunded amounts from revenue, and canceled or fully refunded orders from the order count. No if you want to compare your result with Shopify, whose average order value ignores those adjustments.

### How can I increase my average order value?

The usual levers are product bundles, a free shipping threshold set above your current AOV, cross-sells and complementary product recommendations, and post-purchase upsells. On WhatsApp, Kanal, the WhatsApp marketing app for Shopify, sends product recommendations after an order and follows up on abandoned carts.

### Is my data sent anywhere?

No. The calculation runs entirely in your browser. Nothing is sent to a server or stored.
