A Shopify subscription app sets up recurring orders, gives subscribers a portal to manage them and retries failed payments. Launching a subscription is the easy part. Keeping subscribers past the third renewal is harder, when failed cards, forgotten deliveries and unread notices quietly erode the base.
That is why our first recommendation is not a billing engine. Kanal is the WhatsApp layer that works alongside your subscription app. Through its Recharge integration, it sends upcoming-order reminders, failed-payment recovery messages and win-back offers on WhatsApp, where Kanal reports a 96% read rate. We then compared 11 Shopify subscription apps on subscription types, customer portal, dunning, transaction fees, analytics and migration support, plus Reviewz.ai as a featured review tool. The range goes from free plans for a first replenishment offer to platforms built for large subscription programs.
How We Compared the 13 Apps
We installed each app on a test Shopify store and created a replenishment subscription with a 30-day interval, a prepaid three-month plan and, where supported, a build-a-box offer. We then ran renewals with a failing test card to observe dunning. We scored six dimensions: subscription types supported, customer portal (skip, pause, swap, address and card updates without contacting support), dunning and churn tools, analytics depth, transaction fees on top of the monthly price, and migration or onboarding help. Prices, plan limits and features were checked on each app's Shopify App Store listing on September 10, 2026. Apps no longer available on the App Store were removed, and the featured app is labeled as such.

Subscription Models That Work on Shopify
- Replenishment. The same consumable delivered on a fixed interval: coffee, supplements, pet food, razors. The simplest model and the easiest to automate.
- Curated box. A selection chosen by the brand each cycle. Higher perceived value, more operational work, and the model most exposed to churn when a box disappoints.
- Build-a-box. The subscriber picks the contents each cycle. It retains best when the portal makes swapping effortless, and worst when it does not.
- Access and membership. A recurring fee for content, discounts or early access, often paired with physical products.
- Prepaid. Several cycles paid upfront at a discount. Lower churn by construction and better cash flow, at the cost of a bigger first commitment.
What to Look for in a Shopify Subscription App
- Checkout. Prefer apps that sell subscriptions through Shopify Checkout and Shop Pay rather than an external checkout. The "Works with" section of each listing tells you.
- Customer portal. Skip, pause, swap, reschedule and update a card without emailing support. Every action that requires a ticket becomes a cancellation eventually.
- Dunning. Automatic card retries, update-your-card reminders and a grace period recover a large share of failed renewals.
- Fees. Compare the monthly price plus the percentage plus the per-transaction amount at the subscription revenue you expect in six months, not today.
- Analytics. Cohorts, churn and lifetime value matter more than a revenue total once the program grows.
- Migration. If you may switch later, prefer platforms with assisted migration and exportable contracts.
- Messaging integrations. Renewal and dunning messages need a channel that gets read. Check Klaviyo support, and whether your WhatsApp tool connects to the app: Kanal integrates with Recharge.
The 13 Best Shopify Subscription Apps and Retention Tools
#1 Kanal WhatsApp, the WhatsApp layer that keeps subscribers
Kanal is not a subscription app: billing and the customer portal stay in your subscription app. Kanal is the WhatsApp layer that works alongside it. Subscription revenue is only recurring if subscribers stay, and many cancellations start with a message nobody read. Through its Recharge integration, Kanal listens to Recharge events and sends the matching WhatsApp message. Three days before the next charge, subscribers get a reminder and can skip, swap or add a product in one tap. When a charge fails, they receive a one-tap link to update their card. Cancellation intent can be met with a pause, a discount or a new delivery frequency, and former subscribers receive time-limited win-back offers. Changes made in the chat are applied in Recharge automatically, and Kanal's AI agent works with real Recharge subscription data. Recharge is the subscription app Kanal integrates with. Plans start at $89/month, with a demo on request.
#2 Easy Subscription App, bundles and boxes with 0% fees
Easy Subscriptions is an all-in-one Shopify subscription app for subscribe-and-save plans with weekly, monthly, prepaid or custom billing. It also sells subscription boxes, build-a-box and mix-and-match bundles, memberships, gift boxes and mystery boxes. Quantity breaks, volume discounts and dunning for failed payments are included, and every plan charges 0% transaction fees. The Starter plan is free up to 100 subscription orders, with all subscription features, smart payment recovery, product swapping with a fallback, prepaid subscriptions and unlimited emails with translations. Growth costs $39/month for up to 1,000 orders and adds build-your-own boxes and retention tools. Scale costs $99/month with advanced analytics and a custom email domain, and Enterprise costs $399/month. Rated 5/5 from 208 reviews, it carries the Built for Shopify badge.
#3 Seal Subscriptions, 0% transaction fees on every plan
Seal Subscriptions is rated 4.9/5 from 3,080 reviews. Every plan charges a 0% transaction fee, and prices follow the number of subscriptions. The free plan covers 50 subscriptions with unlimited revenue, product swaps and automations, tiered discounts and full API and webhook access. Paid plans start at $5.95/month for up to 100 subscriptions, adding a passwordless customer portal and reminders about upcoming renewals. Rising Star costs $9.95/month for 250 subscriptions and Legend $24.95/month for 500, with bigger plans for 150,000+ subscriptions and a 30-day free trial. Seal sells classic and prepaid subscriptions, subscription boxes, memberships and free trials. Customers reach their subscriptions through magic links, and real-time analytics track revenue and performance.
#4 Skio Subscriptions, cancel flows and lifecycle journeys
Skio is now listed as a Recharge company, and it says 1,000+ subscription brands such as IM8, Grüns and Everyday Dose run their program on it. It offers a no-code customer portal and build-a-box with static, dynamic or sectioned bundles. Multi-step cancel flows turn cancellations into pauses, swaps and saves, and automated journeys run welcome flows, win-backs and upsells. Passwordless login, real-time analytics and segmentation, and smart payment recovery are included. The Skio team handles migration from other platforms. The Scale plan costs $599/month, or $5,988/year, plus 1% and 20 cents per transaction. Rated 5/5 from 241 reviews.
#5 Subi Subscriptions, subscriptions and loyalty in one app
Subi (formerly Subify) is a subscription and loyalty app for subscribe-and-save plans, memberships, loyalty programs, bundles and subscription boxes, including mystery boxes. Subscribers skip, pause or cancel in the portal, smart dunning retries failed payments, and analytics track recurring revenue. Loyalty points, membership tiers and perks bring buyers back, and the team migrates subscribers from other apps. The free plan is for development stores. Starter costs $29/month plus 1.6% per subscription transaction. Subi costs $119/month plus 0.8%, and Subi Plus $479/month plus 0.4%. Each plan has a 7-day free trial and a 3-month money-back guarantee. Rated 4.9/5 from 913 reviews.
#6 Reviewz.ai, reviews from subscribers on Google and Trustpilot (featured)
Reviewz.ai is not a billing app. It is a review collection app for Shopify, featured here because every renewal is a delivery and a chance to ask for a review. It sends post-purchase invitations by WhatsApp, SMS and email. Satisfied customers are sent to Google or Trustpilot, and negative feedback is captured privately so you can act on it. Paid plans start at $59/month for up to 250 orders, with AI analysis and upsell automation. Pair it with any subscription engine on this list to turn long-term subscribers into public proof.
#7 Loop Subscriptions, cancel flows and payment recovery
Loop is built to grow subscriber lifetime value with dynamic discounts, bundles, build-a-box and one-click checkout links. Personalized cancel flows save at-risk subscribers, and smart dunning retries failed payments, with 15 retries on the Starter plan. A gamified customer portal lets subscribers manage orders, swaps and skips. Automations, bulk actions, team permissions and analytics on drop-off points and revenue drivers complete it. It works with Klaviyo, Attentive, Postscript, Gorgias and 35+ other apps. The free plan covers 50 active subscriptions. Starter costs $99/month plus 1% per transaction, and Pro $399/month plus 0.75%, both with a 14-day free trial. Rated 5/5 from 753 reviews.
#8 Recharge Subscriptions, retention analytics with benchmarks
Recharge has been on the Shopify App Store since 2014 and names Good Ranchers, Bobbie and Dr. Squatch as customers. Subscribers skip, swap and reschedule in a no-code portal. Cancellation prevention offers the right alternative, failed payments are recovered automatically, and lapsed buyers can be won back. Customers can build their own bundles or buy sets you curate, loyalty credits reward subscribers who stay, and retention analytics compare your cohorts to thousands of brands. A $25/month plan covers your first 50 subscribers with no transaction fees and the full Starter feature set. Starter costs $99/month plus 1.49% and 19 cents per transaction, with a 60-day free trial. Plus costs $499/month plus 1.34% and 19 cents. Rated 4.8/5 from 3,123 reviews. Kanal integrates with Recharge natively, so subscribers can manage renewals and fix failed payments on WhatsApp.
#9 Bold Subscriptions, upsells with the Bold suite
Bold Subscriptions has been on the App Store since 2020. It sells prepaid or pay-as-you-go subscriptions and subscription boxes, with flexible schedules, convertible subscriptions, dynamic discounts, express add-ons and upsells. Cancellation flows and automatic dunning help retain subscribers. A full customer portal, bulk price updates, product swaps and reporting are included. Bold Custom Pricing can reward subscribers with VIP pricing, and migration from other subscription apps is complimentary. Launch costs $24.99/month plus a 2% transaction fee, Grow $49.99/month plus 1%, and Scale $74.99/month plus 0.9%. Every plan includes unlimited subscribers and a 30-day free trial. #10 PayWhirl Subscriptions, no monthly fee to start
PayWhirl adds subscriptions to product pages, carts and customer accounts without code, with APIs, webhooks and custom workflows for advanced setups. Smart cancel flows and automated payment retries reduce churn, and analytics and reports track churn. Accounts can be migrated from Recharge, Appstle, Bold, Seal and other apps. Support is US-based, by phone, chat and email. The free plan has no monthly fee: the first $5,000 processed carries 0% fees, then 3%. Pro costs $9/month plus 2%. Traction costs $29/month plus 1.5%, with workflow automation, failed payment actions and the Klaviyo integration. Scale costs $149/month plus 0.75%. Rated 4.7/5 from 191 reviews.

Appstle Subscriptions is rated 5/5 from 8,645 reviews, the largest review base on this list. It sells pay-as-you-go and prepaid subscriptions, subscription boxes and build-a-box. The customer portal offers one-click login and quick action links, and loyalty features cover tiered discounts, custom shipping and gifts. It is natively integrated with other Appstle apps, with hands-on migration and 24/7 support. Plans are priced by subscription revenue, and paid plans charge 0% transaction fees. The free plan covers up to $500 a month in subscriptions. Starter costs $10/month up to $5,000 a month. Business costs $30/month up to $15,000, with build-a-box and cancellation control. #12 Awtomic Subscriptions, wine clubs and build-a-box
Awtomic sells subscriptions for any product, with wine clubs, memberships, specialty foods, coffee and beauty as typical cases. Build-a-box lets customers pick bundles, add-ons and upsells lift order value, and a passwordless portal lets shoppers manage their subscriptions. Its POS integration suits wineries and in-store sales. Flexible schedules, prepaid and batching options, lifecycle marketing with a rewards program, failed payment recovery and bulk processing with API access are included. The listing shows the Growth plan at $299/month plus a 1% transaction fee, with gift subscriptions, SMS, headless support and priority support, and a 14-day free trial. Rated 5/5 from 35 reviews.
#13 Recurpay Subscriptions, 0% transaction fees and 24/7 human support
Recurpay launches product subscriptions, replenishment plans, prepaid plans and curated subscription boxes with 0% transaction fees. Subscribers skip, change items, pause, swap or cancel in a self-serve portal. Smart dunning recovers failed payments, and one dashboard tracks MRR, churn and LTV. The team handles white-glove migration from other apps and offers 24/7 human support. The free plan is for development stores. Launch costs $9/month with unlimited subscriptions. Growth costs $19/month and adds build-a-box, email campaigns, cancellation flows, advanced analytics and API access. Both plans have a 14-day free trial. Rated 4.9/5 from 559 reviews.
Keeping Subscribers: The Messaging Layer
Every Shopify subscription app above manages the billing, and several of them send reminders before a renewal. The channel decides whether those reminders are seen. Unread notices are one reason cancellations arrive as surprises: the customer never saw the upcoming charge, the failed card or the skip option. Kanal moves those moments to WhatsApp. Its Recharge integration triggers WhatsApp flows from Recharge events: upcoming order, charge failed, subscription created, cancelled or reactivated, and address updated. Kanal's WhatsApp AI agent is connected to Recharge, so its answers use real subscription data. Loyalty programs are the other half of retention; our best loyalty apps for Shopify guide covers them.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the best Shopify subscription app?
Pair a billing engine with Kanal. Kanal is our first recommendation for subscription stores: it is not a billing app, but through its Recharge integration it sends renewal reminders, failed-payment recovery and win-back offers on WhatsApp, from $89/month. For billing, the Shopify subscription apps on this list differ on fees and limits. Seal charges 0% transaction fees on every plan, including a free plan for 50 subscriptions. Appstle is free up to $500 a month in subscriptions, and Easy Subscriptions up to 100 subscription orders. Recharge, Skio and Loop add cancel flows and retention analytics, with a percentage fee per transaction on their main paid plans.
Are there free subscription apps for Shopify?
Yes, with limits. Seal is free for 50 subscriptions, Loop for 50 active subscriptions, Easy Subscriptions up to 100 subscription orders, and Appstle up to $500 a month in subscriptions. PayWhirl has no monthly fee but takes 3% after the first $5,000 processed. Subi and Recurpay reserve their free plans for development stores. Check subscriber caps and whether dunning is included before you launch.
Monthly fee or transaction fee: which is cheaper?
It depends on your subscription revenue. A 1% fee on $5,000 of monthly subscription sales is $50, less than many fixed plans. At $50,000 it becomes $500, and a plan with 0% transaction fees can cost less. Model both at your expected volume six months out, and remember that several apps charge a fixed monthly price plus a percentage plus a per-transaction amount.
Do subscription apps work with Shopify Checkout, Shopify Plus and Shopify Markets?
Most apps on this list name Shopify Checkout or Shop Pay among the tools they work with, so read the "Works with" section of each listing before you install. Portal translations and per-market shipping rules depend on the app. Seal, Easy Subscriptions and Subi list many interface languages, and Loop's Pro plan adds a multilingual customer experience. Test a renewal in each market and currency before launch.
Can I switch subscription apps without losing subscribers?
Yes, but plan it carefully. Skio, Subi, Bold, PayWhirl, Appstle and Recurpay all mention migration help on their listings, and Bold's is complimentary. Communicate the change to subscribers before it happens, ideally on a channel they read, and freeze plan changes during the migration window.
How do I reduce subscription churn?
Most churn is passive: failed payments, deliveries that arrive too soon and renewals customers forgot about. Fix it with dunning that retries cards and asks for an update, a portal where skipping is easier than cancelling, and reminders sent where they are read. With its Recharge integration, Kanal sends upcoming-order reminders three days before the charge, failed-payment messages with a one-tap card update link and win-back offers on WhatsApp.
Our Recommendation
Protect the revenue you make recurring. Kanal is our recommendation for that job: through Recharge, it delivers renewal reminders, failed-payment recovery, cancellation offers and win-back messages on WhatsApp, and its AI chatbot answers customers 24/7 before questions turn into cancellations. For billing, choose the Shopify subscription app whose fees and limits match your volume. The comparison table lists each app's free plan, monthly price and transaction fees side by side. Recharge is the subscription app Kanal connects to natively. Our WhatsApp for Shopify hub explains the channel end to end, and the best loyalty apps for Shopify and best Shopify email marketing apps guides cover the rest of the retention stack.
