WhatsApp Marketing Statistics 2026: Figures and KPIs to Track

WhatsApp marketing statistics for 2026 from Meta and WhatsApp: users, business adoption, ads, paid messaging, AI agents and the KPIs to track on your store.

WhatsApp marketing statistics are easy to find and hard to trace. This page keeps only the figures we could check at the source, mostly WhatsApp's own site and Meta's earnings calls. Where no independent public benchmark exists (WhatsApp open, click and conversion rates, ROI), we say so and show you how to measure the number on your own store.

Use it for slide decks, board meetings or investor updates: every figure below links to the document it comes from.

This page focuses on marketing: business adoption, ads, paid messaging and the KPIs to track. For platform-level numbers (users, messaging volume), see the companion page: WhatsApp statistics 2026.

If you want to skip the data dive and just run the playbook, Kanal is the Shopify-native way to start, and the WhatsApp marketing guide walks through the full strategy.

The Figures Meta Has Published

These figures come from WhatsApp's own site and from Meta's earnings call transcripts.

Users and reach

  1. More than 3 billion people in over 180 countries use WhatsApp, according to WhatsApp's About page.
  2. More than 2 billion daily actives on WhatsApp, according to Meta's Q4 2025 earnings call (January 28, 2026).

Businesses, ads and paid messaging

  1. More than 200 million monthly users of the WhatsApp Business app, according to Meta's Q2 2023 earnings call (July 26, 2023). This counts users of the app, not distinct businesses.
  2. Over 80% year-over-year growth in daily click-to-WhatsApp ads revenue, according to the same Q2 2023 earnings call.
  3. A $2 billion annual run-rate crossed by paid messaging within WhatsApp in Q4 2025, according to Meta's Q4 2025 earnings call.

AI agents in business conversations

  1. More than 10 million conversations each week facilitated through Meta's Business AIs, up from 1 million at the start of the year, according to Meta's Q1 2026 earnings call (April 29, 2026).
  2. More than 1 million businesses using Meta Business Agents every week to talk to their customers or complete sales, after Meta made them available globally on WhatsApp and Messenger, according to Meta's Q2 2026 earnings call (July 29, 2026).

None of these figures tells you how WhatsApp will perform for your store. The rest of this page covers the metrics that do, and how to compute them. For the mechanics behind conversations that sell, see the conversational commerce guide. If your store is ready to move, WhatsApp integration for Shopify is a 10-minute setup.

Open Rates and Engagement: Measure Your Own

There is no independent public benchmark for WhatsApp marketing open rates; vendor figures are not audited. The reliable numbers are the ones in your own account, tracked per campaign and per flow:

  • Delivery rate: messages delivered divided by messages sent.
  • Read rate: messages read divided by messages delivered.
  • Click rate: clicks on buttons or links divided by messages delivered.
  • Reply rate: replies divided by messages delivered. A reply also opens the 24-hour customer service window, so it is worth tracking on its own.
  • Opt-out rate: opt-outs divided by messages delivered, read together with your phone number's quality rating in WhatsApp Manager.

Compare each new send with your previous ones, not with a figure from another store. For email, a public benchmark does exist: see the comparison section below.

Open rate is necessary but not sufficient. The full revenue story comes from conversion, which is up next. The WhatsApp newsletter guide covers list-building tactics.

Conversion Rates and ROI: How to Compute Them

Conversion and ROI figures from vendors depend on their customers' lists, offers and attribution windows, so they do not transfer to your store. Compute yours with fixed definitions:

  • Conversion rate per campaign: orders attributed to the campaign divided by messages delivered, within an attribution window you keep the same over time.
  • Revenue per message: attributed revenue divided by messages delivered. This is the number to compare across WhatsApp, email and SMS.
  • Cart recovery rate: carts recovered after a WhatsApp reminder divided by carts that received it. See the abandoned cart recovery strategies post for the playbook.
  • Average order value of WhatsApp-attributed orders, compared with your store average.
  • Repeat purchase rate of customers opted in to WhatsApp. Customers who opt in may already be your most engaged ones, so compare them with a holdout group of opted-in customers who do not receive the flow.
  • Orders started in chat when a WhatsApp chatbot answers product questions in real time.
  • ROI: revenue attributed to WhatsApp minus Meta's message fees and your platform cost, divided by those costs.

Attributed revenue overstates what WhatsApp adds, because some customers would have bought anyway. To measure the incremental part, keep a holdout group (a random share of the audience that does not get the message) and compare revenue per customer between the two groups. If you run Klaviyo for email, compare both channels within the same attribution window.

The WhatsApp marketing ROI and KPIs guide goes deeper into how to model these numbers for your store.

Click-to-WhatsApp Ads: What to Track

Click-to-WhatsApp ads open a conversation instead of a landing page. Meta's figure on the format (see the list above) is about its revenue growth in 2023, not about what it will cost or return for your store. Track these on your own campaigns:

  • Cost per conversation started: ad spend divided by conversations opened from the ad.
  • Conversation-to-order rate: orders divided by conversations started.
  • Cost per acquisition, against a click-to-website campaign with the same budget and audience.
  • Response time on those conversations, since the ad only pays off if someone answers.

If you want to model break-even before turning on spend, the ROAS break-even calculator does the math.

Customer Support Metrics to Track

WhatsApp is not just acquisition: customers use the same chat to ask about orders, sizes and returns. Measure it like any support channel:

  • First response time and resolution time, split between business hours and evenings or weekends.
  • Share of conversations resolved without an agent, when a chatbot or AI agent answers first.
  • CSAT collected in the chat at the end of the conversation.
  • Reopen rate: conversations reopened within 7 days.
  • Cost per conversation: agent time plus any Meta fees, compared with email and phone.

The WhatsApp customer support for Shopify post shows how to set this up step by step.

Benchmarks by Industry and Region: Build Your Own

Performance varies by vertical and by country, and no independent public benchmark breaks WhatsApp results down that way. Your own history is the benchmark that matters:

  1. Pick three to five KPIs from this page (for example read rate, revenue per message and cart recovery rate) and keep their definitions fixed.
  2. Record a baseline over your first four weeks, per flow and per campaign type.
  3. Split results by country: Meta's rates depend on the recipient's country, and your opt-in rate can differ from one market to another.
  4. Keep a holdout group on every automated flow, so you know what WhatsApp adds.
  5. Review monthly, and compare with the same period a year earlier once you have the history, to account for sales, drops and BFCM.

WhatsApp vs SMS vs Email

The three channels do different jobs:

Best forTime-sensitive offers, cart reminders, two-way conversationsShort alertsNewsletters, long-form content, nurture flows
KPI to watchRead rate, reply rate, revenue per messageClick rate, opt-out rateClick rate, unsubscribe rate

For email, there is a public reference point: Mailchimp's email marketing benchmarks, based on data available in December 2023, put the average open rate at 35.63%, the click rate at 2.62% and the unsubscribe rate at 0.22% across all users, and at 29.81%, 1.74% and 0.19% for e-commerce. We have not found an equivalent primary source for WhatsApp marketing, and an email open is not measured the same way as a WhatsApp read, so compare each channel with its own history and judge them against each other on revenue per message.

For a full breakdown, the SMS vs RCS vs WhatsApp comparison explores trade-offs in detail.

Pricing: What Changed

Since July 1, 2025, Meta charges per delivered template message instead of per 24-hour conversation. The rate depends on the template category (marketing, utility or authentication) and on the country calling code of the recipient's number.

Meta WhatsApp Business pricing page

For current rates by country and upcoming changes, see the WhatsApp pricing guide. On top of Meta's fees, count the monthly fee of the platform you send from.

Conclusion: Stop Reading Stats, Start Sending Messages

The published figures show the scale of WhatsApp and Meta's push into business messaging, ads and AI agents. They cannot tell you what WhatsApp will do for your store: that number comes from a test. Start with one flow, keep a holdout group, and read the results after two to four weeks.

If you sell on Shopify, the question is no longer "should we add WhatsApp" but "how fast can we ship it." Kanal is the Shopify-native way to launch broadcasts, abandoned cart recovery, AI chatbot, and post-purchase flows in under an hour. Book a demo or browse our pricing.

Frequently asked questions

What is the average WhatsApp open rate in 2026?

There is no independent public benchmark for WhatsApp marketing open rates; vendor figures are not audited. The reliable number is the read rate in your own account: messages read divided by messages delivered, tracked per campaign and per flow. Compare it with your own previous sends rather than with a figure from another store.

What is the average WhatsApp marketing ROI?

There is no reliable public average: results depend on your margins, your list and your offers. Compute your own ROI as the revenue attributed to WhatsApp minus Meta's message fees and your platform cost, divided by those costs. Measure it flow by flow (abandoned cart, welcome, post-purchase) and keep a holdout group to see the incremental part.

How does WhatsApp compare to email and SMS in 2026?

The three channels do different jobs. Email suits newsletters and long-form content at a low cost per send, SMS suits short alerts, and WhatsApp suits rich, time-sensitive messages and two-way conversations, with Meta charging per delivered template message. The fair comparison is on your own store: send the same offer to comparable segments and compare revenue per message and opt-out rates.

How many businesses use WhatsApp Business in 2026?

On its July 2023 earnings call, Meta said the WhatsApp Business app had more than 200 million monthly users, a count of app users rather than distinct businesses. In July 2026, Meta added a figure on AI: more than 1 million businesses were using Meta Business Agents on WhatsApp and Messenger every week.

Are WhatsApp ads worth it in 2026?

They can be, and a test on your own account is the way to know. Run click-to-WhatsApp ads against a click-to-website campaign with the same budget and audience, then compare cost per conversation started, the share of conversations that turn into orders, and cost per acquisition. Make sure every conversation gets a fast answer, from your team or an automated flow.
